DURGAPUR CHEMICALS LIMITED
STRIVING HARD TO TURN – AROUND
By A K Upadhyay,Director
in Charge,Duragapur Chemicals Limited
Durgapur chemicals limited
(DCL) was incorporated in July, 1963 with high hopes for manufacturing
basic chemicals. DCL, a brain child of Dr. B C Roy, the then chief Minister
of West Bengal, came into operation since January, 1968. This company was
initially conceived to manufacture basic chemicals to cater to the needs
of related industries in the country. It was expected that other chemical
industries would grow up using the basic chemicals manufactured by DCL.
Due to various techno-economic
problems, DCL could not take-off well since beginning, however, the performance
of the company has been steadily improving since 1993-94 by taking various
renovation and modernisation measures in the plants. The company has taken
a leap forward by acquiring 20 percent successive growth over the last
six years both in terms of production and sale. This is quite a significant
achievement considering the global economic slow down coupled with threats
of globalisation thereby leaving to cheap imports in bulk.
The globalisation of
Indian economy exposed the chemical industries in the country to stiff
global competition. Disadvantages faced by the Indian industry like high
cost of power, high interest rate etc. call for a level-playing field for
the Indian industry so that the industry can face the global competition
affectively with the products ranging from caustic soda lye to chloro -
Benzene and other organic chemicals, DCL, one of the pioneer manufacturers,
is striving hard to turn around under the prevailing competitive scenario.
DCL, having its plant
located at Durgapur in the district of Burdwan, West Bengal and with its
corporate office located at calcutta, is committed to serve the customers
to their satisfaction. Every customer is an asset to the company. Quality
adherence and consistency in supply form the backbone of our product sales.
We firmly believe in adhering to delivery schedules providing quality products
and sustained customer services to maintain our position in the changed
market scenario.
DCL commands an enviable
reputation in the market. The company is also planning to tie-up with global
leaders in japan and other countries to shift from its existing mercury
to membrane cell technology for which efforts are already under its way.
During 1998-99 DCL has introduced two new products, viz, stable Bleaching
powder and Bottled Hydrogen gas and completed these projects in record
time. In 1999-2000, DCL introduced two more products DCB (para/ortho) and
1:2:4 TCB, which has both export and demestic market demand.
At the same time, high
standard of process technology (Professional Management and better industrial
relations, HRD etc) has led to improvement in yields, reduction in raw
material consumption, energy saving and firm grip on polleution parameters.
Guided by the personnel
of professional calibre and the spirit of the work force, we at DCL achieved
moderate growth in the past few years. Production is backed by our strong
maintenance wing and quality adherance of our products is ensured by our
central laboratory wing at our Durgapur works. Side by side, capacity utilisation
of our caustic/chlorine plants has increased substantially in the recent
years.
We, at present market
our products to actual users of repute our clients are reputed industries
both in public and private sectors engaged in the manufacturing of soap
and detergent, textile, fertiliser, paper, steel, power, insecticides and
Nitrochloro benzene group of industries. We also export a few of our products
to neighbouring countries like Bangladesh etc through export houses.
In one word, we in DCL,
dream to usher in a new era to consolidate our position in the chemical
sector, and our dedicated team of officers, staff and workmen have pledged
to make DCL, a jewel in the crown.
