Continuously recorded significant
performance
The Story of Oil in India began
in the dense jungles, Swamps and the river valley in Assam in the early
years of the 19th century. But it was only in 1889 that the crude oil production
started in commercial quantities through Digboi well no. 1. History records
a long story of failure, frustration and despair over powered by the dogged
determination of those gallant oil men engaged in oil exploration activities
in the region.Naharkatiya oil field, discovered in 1953, was the first
major success after Digboi. Then followed discovery of Moran oilfield in
1956. The first Government of Independent India found it prudent to give
further boost to ongoing operations in the North Eastern region. Oil India
Pvt. Ltd., was thus incorporated in 1959 as a joint venture of Burmah Oil
Company/Assam Oil Company and the Government of India. Eventually Oil India
Limited (OIL) became a Government of India. Enterprise in the year 1981.
As a premier oil company of India, OIL has been pursuing diverse operations
to help the country achieve self sufficiency in hydrocarbon resources.
Today OIL, as a premier National
Oil Company produces nearby 3.20 million tonnes of crude oil, 1.5 billion
cubic meters of natural gas and around 50,000 tonnes of LPG annually. The
company owns and operates a range of facilities and services required for
oil and gas exploration, development, production and transportation.
In the beginning, OIL's agenda was
simple. To help India achieve self-sufficiency in Hydrocarbon resources.
Towards this end, the company expanded it's range of operations from the
traditional oil fields of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to Mahanadi offshore
in Orissa, the shifting sands of Jaisalmer(Rajasthan), Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra
and even the inaccessible depths of the Andaman Islands. And now, OIL is
planning to pick-up stake in Hydrocarbon ventures abroad.
The company's 1200 Km. long pipeline
network for transportation of crude oil is Asia's first fully automated
pipeline, supplying to various refineries. OIL's leadership extends to
the financial arena too. It has retained its position among the top
profit making companies in India with a consistent and profitable track
record. In 1997-98, OIL achieved a turnover of Rs. 1318 crores with a gross
profit of Rs. 368 crores.
OIL has always been aware of its
responsibility towards enrichment of the quality of life, not only of its
own employees but also that of the people residing in and around
the company's operational areas. OIL's ongoing Social Welfare Programme
aims at providing a stimulating environment to the people. The programme
revolves around Education, Medicare, Family Welfare, Agriculture development,
Handicrafts, Sports etc. These programmes will continue in future also
with increasing vigour.
Today, over 90% of the company's
total energy requirements are met by natural gas utilisation. And massive
afforestation programs have been undertaken at various field installations.
OIL has established a rural development network, which covers 698 villages
in its operational areas in the North East. 1997-98 saw Rs. 2.45 crores
being set aside for community development and Rs.60 lakhs allocated towards
development of educational institutions and sports and cultural organisations.
In the course of it's projects, OIL has constructed over 800 Km. of roads
and over 100 bridges.
Built mobile dispensaries and medical
camps that provide child care and family health services. And disseminated
handicraft and technical skills among the rural youth. All this and more,
as part of OIL's mission of renewing and enriching every aspect, every
region and each individual that the company touches.
The quest for perfection is a never
ending one. Along the way, it has been gratifying for the company that
it has received wide spread recognition and won accolades for it's achievements.
Some milestones have been passed, some goals met, but many still remain.
Foremost among them, the cherished goal of completely meeting the nation's
ever growing need for crude oil. To fulfil this objective, OIL has intensified
exploratory activities using state-of-the art technology and a two pronged
strategy :
-
Increased hydrocarbon production
by enhanced exploration and developmental efforts.
-
Continuation of tight fiscal and
conservation measures, and promotion of alternative sources of energy.

It's been a long journey, but its still
far from over. Over this horizon there are new ones. New challenges.....
new opportunities. And OIL has set out to take it's place in the
new Global village.
It is doing that by assisting companies,
in India and abroad, in the field of petroleum exploration, development,
production, transportation and allied services,.Recently, OIL has signed
production sharing contracts with private companies, Viz. Essar Oil/Polish
Oil & Gas Company, Hindustan Oil Exploration Company/General Fibre
Dealer Ltd.,

Besides these, the company signed
a farm-out agreement with TOTAL of France, for exploration of hydrocarbons
in the Sultanate of Oman. The company has also entered into MOUS with TOTAL
