Since its inception in January,
1920 Bridge & Roof was a wholly owned Subsidiary of Balmer Lawrie &
Company Limited till 1972.
At the time of nationalisation of
oil companies, Indo-Barma Petroleum, who were holding major shares of Balmer
Lawrie, became a Public Sector Company. As a result, subsidiary companies,
of IBP, including Bridge & Roof became members of the Public Sector
under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.Since April 1987, it
has come under the administrative control of the Department of Public Enterprises,
in the Ministry of Industries of the Government of India, as one of the
constituents of the holding company called Bharat Yantra Nigam Ltd.
Bridge & Roof's is history reflects
India's rapid economic and industrial growth since independence. Over the
years Bridge & Roof has become one of the largest contracting organisations
in India in the field of all kinds of construction, manufacturing and erection
works after having completed, with utmost success, several large-scale
projects.
In the last four decades, the field
of activities has continuously expanded and now covers projects in the
field of Petrochemical and Refineries, Power Stations, Steel Plants, Non-ferrous
Metal Plants, Fertilizers and Chemical Complexes. Cement Factories, Storage
Tanks and other similar industrial establishments. The range of services
includes mechanical installations, erection and commissioning of equipment
as well as construction of large sports complexes, together with their
infrastructure.
Bridge & Roof utilises the most
modern and updated construction equipment and technology through its highly
specialised staff in executing turnkey projects including design, and also
draws upon the experience of specialists,
on specific instances to complete
its contracts, both within and outside the country, in the most economical
and professional manner and in the shortest possible time.
Bridge & Roof currently has
an annual turnover of Rs. 560 million and employees over 1800 people in
its permanent cadre, while at any time, more that 10,000 workmen in various
categories are engaged in temporary roles at different job sites.

itself in the fields of Fabrication & Erection of large Diameter Floating
Roof Tanks for storage of Crude Oil & Petroleum Products in almost

STANDARD, ISO 9001 FOR TANK CONSTRUCTION.
The Company has completed a major
Tankage Works for 75 Nos. Floating & Cone Roof Tanks at Jamnagar, Gujrat
for Reliance Petroleum Ltd., valued at Rs. 47.11 Crores (excluding
cost of Steel).
The Company intensified its efforts
during the mid seventies to build up its international image venturing
out in the global arena and over the period executed several projects in
the countries like Iraq, Bahrain, Syria, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Maldives, Nepal
etc. It has completed one Road Construction Project & four Oil
Depot Project in Nepal Valued at 33.81 Crores and 21.29 Crores respectively.
The Company has also exported Fabricated
Structural and Marine Freight Container to Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and
U. S. S. R.

as on 31st March, 1999. Besides approximately 20,000 persons including

FUTURE STRATEGIES
Over the Years the Company has become
a premier construction and engineering company in the field of Civil &
Mechanical Construction and Turnkey Projects including Electrical and Instrumentation,
with enviable reputation for quality & reliability. In future, the
Company aims to achieve market leadership in construction field and move
away form conventional construction jobs to Turnkey Execution of Systems
& Subsystems which is the current requirement of the clients. The Company
has already established a separate Turnkey Division for the purpose. It
will be one of the thrust area of Company's activities in the coming years.
In its Howrah Workshop the manufacturing
facility for production of Unit Type Bailey Bridges has been established
which as a substantial requirement by Director General Border Roads and
North Eastern States of India.
The Company expects to more than
double its Turnover and Profitability in the next five years. The compound
growth rate of 20% is targeted to be achieved over the next five years.
DIVERSIFICATION PLANS
Roads & Highways
In diversification the company's
success has come from the mechanised construction of Highways & Expressways.
Results and consequently, reputation has won for the company high praise
from the World Bank. The ADB has prequalified B & R for undertaking
Road Construction Jobs in India & Nepal. The Company has successfully
completed work on the rehabilitation & improvement of the Sonauli-Gorakhpur
State Highway, a World Bank aided project valued at Rs. 300 Millions and
strengthening & improving existing carriage way of Tribhuvan Highway,
Hetauda-Birgunj Section in Nepal under loan assistance of ADB valued at
Rs. 270 Millions Currently the Company is engaged in the construction of
Calcutta-Durgapur Expressway valued at Rs. 240 millions & Vijayawada-Nandigama
Road Section (48 km) valued at Rs. 590 Millions under National Highways
Authority of India (an ADB funded project).
Ports & Jetties
The Company has also diversified
its activities in the construction of Ports & Jetties. It has recently
completed No. :8 Berth at Netaji Subhas Dock of Calcutta Port Trust which
heralds the beginning of an all pervasive modernization in the Calcutta
Dock System. Kakinada Coastal Installation, Dry Dock at GRSE & Jetty
work at CPT are the jobs under present Execution.
Piling & Cooling Towers
The other key areas of the company's
developing business are Piling Work & Construction of Cooling Towers.
It has entered into a Technical Collaboration agreement with Burger &
Associates of the United States for transfer of Cooling Tower Technology,
both in respect of Induced & Natural Draught. B&R is now renowned
for its efficient handing of different types of Piling Work in varying
nature of soil.
Turnkey & Special Projects
The company has executed some Turnkey
jobs in recent past. This has been identified as one of the Thrust areas
for growth of the company in future. The company has constituted a separate
Turnkey Division for this purpose. The company is presently executing one
prestigious Turnkey/EPC contract of Petroleum Oil Terminal Projects at
Navghar Storage Terminal near JNPT, Uran, Maharashtra for Indian Oiltanking
Ltd.
Overseas Projects
The Construction of Hetauda-Birgunj
Road Projects in Nepal valued at Rs. 33.81 Crores, is just completed. The
work for Turnkey execution of four nos. of Oil Depots at Kathmandu, Thankot,
Pokhra & Amlekhgunj in Nepal valued at Rs. 21.29 Crores for Nepal Oil
Corporation Ltd. is also completed. The Company achieved Export Turnover
of Rs. 12.00 Crores during 1997-98 & Rs. 1.10 Crores in 1998-99. The
Company is trying to book overseas orders from Bangladesh & Nepal.
Bailey Bridge
The Company's Workshop at Howrah
has successfully diversified into manufacture of Unit Type Bailey Bridge.
It has adopted the design & manufacturing technology for Unit Type
Bailey Bridge & have got the same approved by Directorate of Quality
Assurance & Engineering Equipment, Ministry of Defence, Department
of Defence Production. The Company has been technically qualified for Design,
Manufacture & Supply of Unit Type Bailey Bridge by Director General
of Border Roads (DGBR). Orders booked for manufacture & supply of 50
Nos. Bailey Bridges valued at Rs. 20.40 Crores in 1998-99 from DGBR/PWD
Mizoram, Tripura; PDCL/WB/PWD Bhutan PWD/ Skim & Nagaland.
Truck Mounted Domestic
Containers
Howrah Workshop has also diversified
into manufacture of Truck Mounted Domestic Containers developed on association
with TELCO. The market demand of Truck Mounted Containers with TELCO is
picking up rather slowly as potential users are yet to fully accept such
vehicle for transportation of goods in preference to traditional modes.
However, demands for various type of Containers is very encouraging in
Southern Region. The Company arranged an establishment at Madras for assembling
and supplying of Steel as well as Aluminum Containers in Collaboration
with Indian Aluminum Company suitable for various chassis manufactured
by TELCO & Ashoke Leyland. It is expected that marketing of Truck Mounted
Container through Madras establishment of the Company in the coming years
will be more encouraging. |
