Bharat Aluminium Company
Limited (B A L C O) holds the coveted position of being the first Public
Sector Undertaking in Aluminium sector.Incorporated in 1965, BALCO has
been closely associated with the growth of the Indian Aluminium Industry
and has played the pivotal role in making aluminium a leading metal with
myraid uses ranging from household, industrial to strategic defence and
aerospace applications.
BALCO has two working
unites-an integrated Aluminium complex situated at Korba in Madhya Pradesh
and the second in West Bengal in Bidhanbag equipped to produce only downstream
facilities.BALCO is vertically integrated from sourcing of bauxite from
its captive mines, refining and smelting to produce aluminium and a variety
of semi finished products.
BALCO has contributed
significantly as a primary aluminium producer, providing sustenance to
vital industries and has proved its mettle by developing and supplying
special aluminium alloys to the nation’s intermediate range ballistic missile
Agni and surface missile Prithvi.

MARKETING
The sale of the products
manufactured effected by BALCO through its marketing network.It has regional
marketing offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai.Besides, Territorial
Offices in places like Pune, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Baroda, etc. are also
assisting in marketing the products.In addition, the services of the various
consignment agents are also availed of by the Company.
The Company has achieved
ever highest turnover of Rs. 896.5 crores during 1999-2000 i.e. an increase
of 3% over last year turn over of Rs. 871 crore, despite lesser sale by
1618 tonnes.This could result mainly on account of higher sale of value
added products by the company.BALCO’S share of rolled products amongst
all primary producers accounts for 33% sale in domestic market and has
achieved all time record despatch of 44,035 tonnes both from Korba and
BBU combined during the year 1999-2000. The
Company is installing a New Cold Rolling Mill at Korba to produce 36,240
tpa sheets/coils of minimum 0.12 thickness at sanctioned cost of rs 157.50
crore. All imported materials have reached at site and the erection work
is in full swing. The main equipment i.e. Strip caster and old rolling
mill has been supplied by FATA HUNTERS of Italy.Civil work has been completed
by M/s Engineering & Projects India Limited.The Project is expected
to be commissioned by 1st quarter 2001.This would give BALCO
a competitive advantage and increase profitability of the company.
The company is also
modernising its foils plants at BBU.
The company is developing
two captive mines viz Mainpath and Kwardha in M P while the production
from Mainpath has already, commenced the other mine at Kwardha is in the
process of development .The company expects to receive necessary clearances
from MOEF soon.BALCO has requested the M P state Government, to grant permission
for 60 hectares encroachment free Government land to start up the preliminary
activities at Kwardha mine. The project to start production from early
2001.

DISINVESTMENT/
The Disinvestment commission
set up by the Govt. of India had recommended disinvestment of 51% equity
shares in the equity capital of Rs. 488 crores(now 244.45 Crores) to the
strategic partner.The Government has constituted Inter-Ministerial Group
(IMG) to deal with issues arising in the course of the disinvestment. M/s
Jardine Flemming has been appointed as Global Advisor to assist in the
process of such disinvestment.
