Limited, in short known as WEBCON, has been established in 1979 as a multi-disciplinary
public sector consultancy organisation by a consortium of all India financial
institutions like IDBI, IFCI, ICICI, IIBI, WBIDC, WBSIDC, SIDICO etc. and
State Bank of India(SBI) and other nationalised banks under the leadership
of IDBI for playing a promotional role on behalf of promoter institutions
for development of cottage, tiny and small scale sector and to provide
services like preparation of project feasibility reports and conducting
the status studies for specific industries on a modest scale.
In the wake of liberalisation of
the Indian economy in 90s, many multinational consultancy firms have opened
their shops in the country with Calcutta no exception. Commensurate with
the economic changes, it was though necessary to re-orient operational
strategy, modernise offices based on information technology driven system
and create a data bank to cater to the needs of the emerging clients both
in the private and public sector. In the process, the organisation has
reoriented its mission and presently has been playing a catalytic role
towards promotion of entrepreneurship, industries and infrastructure, rejuvenation
of sick units and providing specialised economic and management services
under one roof to the entrepreneurs, promotional agencies, financial institutions
and the government.
