MILE STONES
 
Oct 1971 214 coking coalmines taken over and placed under BCCL formed as a    subsidiary of SAIL.
May 1972 Coking coalmines nationalised
Jan 1973 711 non-coking coal mines taken over
May 1973 Non-coking coalmines nationalised
June 1973 Coal Mines Authority Ltd. (CMAL) formed to own and manage all non-coking coalmines except those under BCCL.
Oct 1974 Department of coal created under ministry of energy-both BCCL and CMAL placed under Department of coal
Nov 1975  Formation of Holding Company, Coal India Ltd. (CIL), with five subsidiaries. ECL, BCCL, CCL, WCL and CMPDIL
Jan 1986 Creation of 2 more subsidiaries NCL and SECL out of CCL and WCL
Apr 1992 Creation of one more subsidiary MCL out of SECL
