Lighting Up One Fourth of the Nation

Over the last twenty five years of its march, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has today emerged as one of the largest power utilities in Asia, lighting up one fourth of the nation. The company has earned laurels for project execution, operation and maintenance standards which stand at par with international benchmarks. Today, NTPC has 13 coal based and 7 gas based projects with a total installed capacity of 19,435 MW. The approved capacity of the corporation is 22,955 MW. 

During the last three years of the current five year plan, NTPC has commissioned a capacity of 2200 MW. This comprises Vindhyachal Stage -II -1000 MW (2 x 500 MW), Unchahar Stage -11- 420 MW (2 x210 MW), Kayamkulam-350 MW and Faridabad -430 MW. All these units have been added ahead of schedule, some in record time. 

GLOBAL RANKING

NTPC is globally ranked as the 6th largest generator, in terms of thermal generation and the second most efficient in capacity utilization among the top ten generators, according to the "Global Utility Benchmaking Survey" conducted on the basis of the data for the year 1998 by Data Monitor, UK. 

In the ASIA WEEK 2000 survey of top 1000 Asian companies, NTPC has improved its ranking from 299 to 295 in terms of sales. In India, NTPC ranks seventh in terms of sales and second in terms of profit.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU)

NTPC has achieved all its MOU targets with Government of India under "Excellent" category for the year 2000-01.

TURNOVER AND PROFIT

NTPC achieved a net turnover of 19,220.47 crore in 2000-01 registering an increase of 11.85 per cent over the last year's turnover of Rs.17,184.05 crore. The provisional profit, after tax, rose to Rs. 3612.15 crore registering an improvement of 5 .48 per cent over the previous year's profit of Rs 3424.53 crore.

ROCE & RONW

The Return On Capital Employed and Return On Net Worth is 12.70 per cent and 13.87 per cent respectively for the year 2000-01.

CONTRIBUTION TO EXCHEQUER

NTPC has made a direct contribution of Rs.1651.73 crore to the exchequer during 2000-01 including income tax, dividend and dividend tax.

DIVIDEND
The Corporation paid a dividend of Rs. 650 crore for the financial year 1999- 2000.

OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE

NTPC stations all over the country generated 130 Billion Units (BUs) with the coal stations achieving a Plant Load Factor(PLF)of 81.8 per cent. This is an increase of 10.2 per cent over the previous year's generation of 118 BUs. With an operating capacity of around 19 per cent, the corporation today generates approximately 26 per cent of the country's entire generation.

LOW COST POWER FROM NTPC

NTPC today supplies the cheapest power in the country. NTPC sold power at an overall average rate of Rs 1.55 per kwh during the reference year.

APPROVED INVESTMENT

The Corporation has an investment of Rs.44,957.87 crore. The authorized capital on March, 2001 is Rs.8000 crore.

DOMESTIC BORROWINGS

Various domestic banks and financial institutions have committed over Rs 8000 crore for meeting the debt requirement of NTPC's capacity addition programme.

Twenty eight loan agreements aggregating to around Rs 5900 crore have been executed with various domestic banks and financial institutions, including 25 loan agreements aggregating to around Rs.4000 crore during 2000-01. To part finance the capital expenditure, loans aggregating to around Rs. 974 crore have been utilised during 2000-01 out of the above loans. The cumulative utilisation of the above loans is Rs 1604 crore.

JBIC LOAN TO SIMHADRI

Loan agreement for second tranche loan of Japanese Yen 12,194 million (Rs. 450 crore) for Simhadri project has been signed with Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

REALISATION AND OUTSTANDINGS

NTPC raised billings of Rs.19,482.04 crore in 2000-01 and succeeded in realizing Rs.17,271.27 crore, which is realization of 88.7 per cent approx, excluding Central Plan Assistance (CPA). The outstanding as on March 2001, have gone up to Rs.16,108.09 crore, including surcharge of Rs. 6129.94 crore.

AVAILABILITY BASED TARIFF (ABT)

Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has issued Orders on ABT, and Tariff Principles and Norms for Central generating stations excluding NTPC on 15/12/2000 and 21/12/2000 respectively. The impact. of the above orders of CERC will lead to substantial reduction in internal resources. The total impact for NTPC over the next 11 years i.e. upto 2011-12 will be to the tune of Rs.18,000 crore. This will compel NTPC to reduce the capacity addition programme to only 6000 MW instead of the planned 20,000 MW by the year 2012.

NTPC has appealed to the Delhi High Court against the ERC's decision on ABT. Delhi High Court in its Interim Order has stated that CERC orders shall be implemented in letter and spirit, except that NTPC shall continue to charge tariff on the basis of the pre existing norms subject to various conditions.

CORPORATE PLAN 

NTPC has plans to double its capacity to 40,000 MW by 2012 AD as per details given below.

A capacity addition programme of 3000 MW is in various stages of construction. As part of its programme, the 4 projects are Simhadri (Andhra Pradesh) - 1000 MW comprising 2 units each of 500 MW and Talcher stage - II (Orissa) –2000 MW comprising 4 units each of 500 MW.

  • Projects in tendering stage
  • Rihand Stage II - 1000 MW, Ramagundam Stage III-500 MW and Sipat Stage I-1980 MW projects are expected to take off shortly. While bid has been opened for Rihand & Ramagundam Projects NITs for Sipat are expected by next financial year. Sipat will be India's first project with Super Critical Technology having unit size of 660 MW each.

  • Feasibility reports for Kahalgaon Stage-II (2 X 660 MW), Barh (3 x 660 MW), Sipat-II (I x 660 MW) and Vindhyachal Stage III (x 500 MW) have been submitted to CEA and project appraisal is in progress.

  • EDF, France has been appointed as Engineering cum Project Management consultant for NTPC's maiden venture in hydel power-Koldam
  • Project (800 MW) in Himachal Pradesh. Other infrastructure activities such as site survey, land acquisition, construction of approach road, etc. have been taken up.


JOINT VENTURES
New JV 

50% Share in SAIL Joint Venture NTPC has signed the "Share Acquisition and Shareholder's Agreement" in March, 2001 with SAIL for transfer of 50% shares of the SAIL Power Supply Company Limited(SPSCL), a subsidiary of SAIL.

NTPC and SAIL will each have 50% equity in SPSCL, which will operate and maintain two captive power units of SAIL at Durgapur and Rourkela steel plants having a combined capacity of 240 MW. While the authorized share capital of the joint venture company is Rs.130 crore, its debt equity ratio has been worked out as 70:30.

The company has secured orders for about Rs.16 crore for the year 2000-01.
UTILITY POWERTECH LIMITED (UPL)
During the year 2000-01, UPL has received orders for approximately Rs.48 crore. 

CONSULTANCY

During the year 2000-01, the consultancy wing achieved a turnover of Rs 11.25 crore. The wing secured orders valued at Rs.9.42 crore. Major orders were received from West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Gujarat Mineral Development Corp. Ltd, New Delhi Municipal Corporation and UP Raja Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. 

ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT

As an environment protection measure, NTPC has till date planted approximately 14.8 million trees at its different projects. Dadri and Kawas stations were awarded the prestigious Indo-German Green Tech Environment Excellence Award 1999-2000 instituted by the Green Tech Foundation and the Centre for the International Transfer of Technology (ITUT), Germany.

ASH UTILISATION

During the year 2000-2001, 30 lakh tonnes of ash has been utilised for various productive purpose's against MOU target of 29 lakh tonnes which is approximately 11.5% of the total ash generation. The major utilization, was in the areas of cement & asbestos Industry, Ash Dyke Raising and Land Development & Embankment. 

One more pilot brick manufacturing plant was commissioned during the period at Unchahar raising the total number of NTPC stations to eleven where ash-brick manufacturing facility has been established. So far more than 70 mill ion bricks have been manufactured at these plants and utilised for various in-house construction activities.

Large quantity of ash from Badarpur power plant, managed by NTPC, is being used in prestigious projects around Delhi such as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Noida Greater Noida Express way 

ISO CERTIFICATION

Till date, the following stations regional headquarters/corporate departments of NTPC have received ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 certifications:

ISO 14001 
Eight NTPC Stations, namely Ramagundam, Dadri,. Korba. Rihand, Vindhyachal, Singrauli, Gandhar & Kawas and the Balco Captive Power plant under its management have been accredited with ISO-14001 certification as a result of pursuing sound environment management practices and systems.
ISO 9001 
Corporate Engineering Services, Corporate Operation Services, Power Management Institute (PMI) and Noida Services Group. 
ISO 9002 
Corporate Contracts and Materials, All stations of WR, NCR( excluding Faridabad), Talcher Kaniha, Singrauli and Rihand. 
Regional headquarters of WR and NCR.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

NTPC R&D Centre has been accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), under Ministry of Science and Technology.
NABL is the recognized Government agency to give accreditation to the testing and research laboratories in India.

GUJARAT EARTHOUAKE RELIEF

NTPC deployed 81 persons, including 8 doctors for electrification, medical assistance and other relief work for earthquake affected Gujarat. NTPC engineers were also engaged in the restoration of 10 damaged sub-stations and the units of the Kutch. Lignite Thermal Station. In addition, 10 D.G sets were also provided.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The total strength of employees of the corporation stands at 24,012 as on 31/3/200 I as against 24,024 as on 31/3/2000. The overall man-MW ratio for the year was 1.10.

POWER MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

During the year, nearly 5000 power professionals, both in public and private sector were trained. The institute conducted 218 programmes, including a major national seminar "Towards removing roadblocks in power development" in January 2001. PMI has entered into the field of consultancy in the restructuring, training and development module of APSEB in partnership with Arthur Anderson.

EMPLOYEE RELATIONS

Industrial relations in NTPC continued to be cordial and harmonious throughout the year. Believing in the philosophy of participative management, employees at all levels have been continually interacting with the management through structured as well as informal meetings.

SAFETY

Eleven stations of NTPC bagged the National Safety Awards for the year 1999 from British Safety Council, U.K in recognition and commendation of services rendered by the stations for the cause of safety. 

REHABILITATION & RESETTLEMENT (R&R)

NTPC is committed to rehabilitate & resettle the people displaced due to project activities and has been making sincere efforts to improve their socio economic status. Rehabilitation Action Plan ( RAP ) for Talcher-Kaniha, Sipat, Anta-II & Auraiya-II has been approved. The socio-economic survey for Koldam, Barh & North Karanpura Projects was awarded.

AWARDS

For the 15th consecutive year, NTPC employees have bagged Prime Minister's Shram Award. For the year 2000, NTPC won for the second time the Shram Ratna, the highest category of the Prime Minister's Shram Awards. Shri Raghavan Pillai Paremeswaran Nair of Korba is the proud recipient of the award.  For the year 1999, Shri Dilip Krishnan, an employee of NTPC, Singrauli, won the award.

Eleven power stations of NTPC received the Govt. of India Meritorious Productivity Awards for achieving improvement in the performance in peak hours for 1997-98.
