Essential Elements of
Leadership

-
Leadership starts long before one is
placed in position to lead.
-
It begins with personal ethics, common
sense, and a willingness to hold oneself and others accountable.
-
It involves a commitment to consistency
and the willingness to ensure adherence to such core values as honour,
respect, and devotion to duty
-
It involves placing personal opinions
aside and focussing on issues that affect the majority, rather than the
minority.
Exemplifying Good Leadership
-
To serve as an example is far from easy
and requires a conscious effort.
-
The old mindset of “do as I say and
not as I do” no longer works today.
-
Each time something is allowed to pass
that should be addressed; the tone is set for others to follow.
-
It is often easy to ignore minor incidents,
but each time we choose to do so, we diminish our organization and ourselves.
The Need to Share
-
Leadership is about accepting responsibility
and passing along praise.
-
When things go well, they do so because
of the contributions of many.
-
No single individual can attain sustained
success without receiving the support of those they work with and for.
-
It is essential to nurture the development
and success of others through our own actions.
Truths About Leadership
-
Leadership is a learned behaviour. Rarely
is anyone born with the ability to lead.
-
All that leaders have in common is the
initiative and the desire. There is no one single leadership personality.
-
Leadership is the ability to get people
to follow- to motivate, rather than simply cause to do.
-
A leader must provide clear vision and
direction, and communicate such vision clearly and with passion.
-
The passion and logic of the vision
is what motivates followers to make the vision their own.
